New heater cover for humming bird food
January 22nd to March 14th

This is the 'current' heater. Made from a plastic water jug and mylar blanket. A 30 watt appliance bulb running 24 hours per day keeps the fluid from freezing at least to -10oC (That is the coldest we have had since it has been in use). Without the lamp the contents will freeze at -5oC. You might note that we do have an unheated feeder, and the hummers eat from both, but the non-heated one empties quicker than the heated one.

This project is an offshoot of the box made for rain protection of our newspapers. Same six sided board beveled to 30o bevel. Shown with a first "lid".

Well nothing can be left to be that simple - right!

It took a couple of days to figure out how to get the 'star' right(ish) but if it works it will turn out to have been a great learning experience.

Top sanded, and ready to be put on the box when it is ready.

Conformation of the saying 'there are never enough clamps'!

Glue up of the 6 sided box.

See conformation of the conformation!

Glue the lid on.

Finally put in place! It is longer than the old one because the electrical stuff is all inside and out of the weather. Now the old version lit the kitchen all night, and I think we are going to miss it.
