Prepping the bottom end for it's brass protection.

This steady guide was created for the last cane I made a couple of years ago. The wheels are high end skate board wheels that Lee Valley was selling many years ago. They have very good bearings and run true under pressure.

Now the five bolts that hold the thing together and down on the lathe bed, are NOT the best stuff in the world. There are 5 of them all the same size, purchased at Home Depot exactly for this job. The heads on all 5 are NOT the same size! Using a Saskatchewan socket set (adjustable crescent wrench) I had to touch up the adjustment on the wrench for every head to be tightened.

Corollary: The rule about not buying Roberts screws from Home Depot, add bolts to the list if they are going to be reused.

This picture was taken just after I mounted the steady guide on the lathe, but before I did any turning with it in place. I cut the corners off without the steady guide, but as I worked the now round in the center of its length, I could see a ghost image as it flexed out of line. Think of the ghost as a shadow on the back side from the cutting tool.

Next was to cut off 45o sides to make it rounder. This thing is going to be 36 inches long on the lathe and will be VERY hard to keep straight if I have to take too much off as it gets rounded.

First step was to cut off a square piece the length of the board. This board is about 9/4's thick, and the table saw didn't even blink cutting it.

This is the starting place. I "think" this is some sort of walnut, because it smells like walnut when you cut it. But it is so heavy I don't know. It was a Christmas present from Heather and Steve a couple of years ago.
