As with most of these things, the story in pictures started much after the project. Our "new to us" cat Charlie seems to live in the basement. If we hope to not have her dig up everything we had better supply a scratching post. This started out as 2 SPF studs from Home Depot.

When we went to get 5/8's sisal rope, there was none and it is very likely that our local supply house will not get any more. This is "oiled" with lanolin and we are hoping that airing it for several days will make it acceptable.

We do know that rope oiled with non natural (hydro carbon) is NOT acceptable.

In an attempt to make it stand the ravages of cat(s) better I'll add a ring around the base to make it a little wider

(17:02:2020)
Build a jig to make glue up easer? Now if one could just make cutting and fitting the parts a little easer!

(17:02:2020)
Glue-up of the center part of the base

(19:02:2020)
Glue-up outer ring to the center. Each of the joints has a biscuit reinforcement. Turns out that because of the angles a #0 biscuit just fit in the joint and let it slip together.

And with this the base is done.

Everything attached and ready for some varnish.

(21:02:2020)
Varnish on the bottom of the base

(21:02:2020)
Turns out it is easer to hang it up so varnish the rest of the post.

(21:02:2020)
Start of wrapping the rope on the post, held in place with 5/8th staples. God bless air staplers.

(23:02:2020)
Almost done the wrap. Each turn got a staple to hold it in place. Trick is keeping the rope from twisting as it was pulled up.

(23:02:2020)
End wrapped in electrical tape and tucked into a hole in the post.

(23:02:2020)
Attach to base to the post. Note the felt pads to protect the floor.

(23:02:2020)
This is why they are called a finial! Last step, to put the knob on the top.

(23:02:2020)
Moved and set in place! NOW will it get used??
